Costco Kirkland Signature Burger Steak with Gravy Review

While vacationing in Maui, we checked out Costco’s pre-made meal section and found several meals that aren’t available in Canada. One of them was this Kirkland Signature Burger Steak with Gravy, which appears to be Costco’s take on Salisbury steak. To be honest, it didn’t look particularly appetizing, but we decided to give it a try anyway. Read on to find out what I thought of it and whether I’d buy it if it ever made its way to Canada!

Location in Store

I found this in the refrigerated pre-made meal section at Costco in Maui beside the Kirkland Signature Gyro Kit and the Kirkland Signature Roasted Chicken & Swiss Roller Tray. The item number is 22120.

Taste

The meal is pretty much what the name suggests—a hamburger patty served like a steak and smothered in gravy. It’s loaded with onions, with chunks mixed into the patties and sliced onions throughout the tray. There’s also plenty of gravy. Flavor-wise, it’s rich, beefy, and quite salty, with the onion flavor coming through prominently.

I think there may be some garlic in the seasoning as well. The patties are nicely seasoned, giving them a savory flavor beyond just the beef and onions. The quality of the meat seemed fairly good overall. I did notice the occasional grainy bite and small piece of gristle, but for the most part the texture was pleasant and the meat tasted decent.

The gravy looked a bit unusual, with a somewhat translucent, gel-like appearance that wasn’t especially appealing. Fortunately, it tasted much better than it looked. It had a rich, salty beef stock flavor that paired well with the patties and onions. Overall, this is a hearty, no-frills source of protein. I’d never choose it over a real steak, roast beef, or another higher-quality cut of beef, but it’s perfectly acceptable for what it is.

Cost

The meal costs $4.99 USD per pound, and I paid $16.29 for my 3.26-pound tray. That seems like a reasonable price, although it is a fairly inexpensive meal made up of simple ingredients. You’re essentially getting hamburger patties topped with gravy and onions, with no side dishes included. Considering the quality and portion size, the value is decent, but it doesn’t feel like a particularly great bargain given how basic the meal is.

Convenience

This meal was very easy to prepare. I preheated the oven to 375°F, removed the plastic lid, covered the tray with foil, and baked it for about 45 minutes. The package instructions suggested cooking until the internal temperature reached 165°F, but when I checked it at the 40-minute mark, it hadn’t quite reached that temperature yet. As a result, I had to leave it in the oven for a few extra minutes before it was fully heated through.

The meal kit only comes with burger patties, gravy, and onions, so I recommend serving it with a side such as roasted potatoes, mashed potatoes, bread, or a fresh salad. Roasted vegetables would also pair nicely with it. The best-before date was three days after the packaging date, so it should be eaten fairly quickly and kept refrigerated until then. You could potentially freeze the meal, but I suspect the texture of the onions would suffer once thawed and reheated.

Nutrition

Calories

I don’t have the exact nutrition facts for this meal because Costco wouldn’t provide them when I asked, stating that they weren’t allowed to release that information. However, I found an online source that reported the Kirkland Signature Hamburger Steak with Gravy contains approximately 151 calories per 100-gram serving. I can’t verify the accuracy of that information.

Ingredients

I like that beef is the primary ingredient and that the meal contains plenty of recognizable ingredients such as eggs, onions, and garlic. That said, the ingredients list is fairly long and includes a number of processed additives and flavoring agents. There are also some less desirable ingredients, such as corn syrup and palm oil. The meal contains egg, milk, soy, and wheat.

Taste: 7/10

Cost: 8/10

Convenience: 8.5/10

Nutrition: Unknown exact nutrition facts but I guess it’s high in fat and sodium. This meal also definitely does not have a clean ingredients list.

Overall

Give it a try!

This meal wasn’t terrible, but it’s probably not something we’ll buy again. It’s very basic, filling, and comforting, but it doesn’t offer much beyond beef patties, onions, and gravy. If you’re a fan of Salisbury steak or similar homestyle comfort foods, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy it.
