Costco Olympic Craft Meats Garlic Sausage Review

Versatile, flavorful gluten-free garlic sausage!

Garlic sausage is a staple in our household because we eat perogies often and in my opinion you can’t have perogies without sausage to go along! Garlic sausage is extremely versatile and goes with a ton of different dishes.

Previously I’ve reviewed the Costco Smokey River Meat Company Turkey Breakfast Sausages and the Costco Olympic Smoked Cocktail Sausages.

Today I’m reviewing the Costco Olympic Craft Meats Garlic Sausage. This can be found in the refrigerated section by the bacon and other sausages. The item number is 3997997.

Taste

I didn’t absolutely love the taste of this sausage but it wasn’t all that bad either. It’s extremely salty and very flavorful and moist. I think the sausage may have a bit more fat than other sausages I’ve tried due to it being a little more moist, soft and flavorful.

There’s a moderately strong garlic flavor and I didn’t notice any spice. One thing I didn’t love about the sausage was how thick and tough the casing was on the outside. It kind of turned my stomach to be honest, as I sliced it the casing just kind of slid off. I prefer sausage with a thin or barely noticeable casing.

This is a basic garlic sausage that tastes alright but I found the casing way too thick for my liking.

Cost

I paid $13.99 Canadian (regular price) for the two 800 gram sausages.

These are large sausages so I think that it’s a pretty reasonable price.

Convenience

You get two separately packaged garlic sausages in the mesh packaging. The best before date was about two months from the date we purchased the the sausage.

Garlic sausage can be used in so many different ways! You can make a one skillet stir fry with it, barbecue it and serve it with a salad, use it in soup or jambalaya or serve it along with perogies like I do.

Nutrition

This isn’t that healthy, it’s loaded with sodium and has a pretty decent amount of fat! It is gluten-free though which is great for individuals who are celiac or following a gluten-free diet.

100 grams of sausage is 270 calories, 22 grams of fat, 14 grams of protein, 1080 mg of sodium, one gram of sugar, zero grams of fibre and four grams of carbohydrates.

If you’re watching your sodium intake, I’d probably recommend steering clear of eating a ton of this sausage.

I wouldn’t buy this sausage again, my husband liked it and I didn’t mind the flavor but I found the casing way too thick and then when I removed the casing I was left with just super soft sausage.

Scoring

Taste: 7/10

Cost: 9/10

Convenience: 10/10

Nutrition: 4/10

Overall

Give it a try!

The casing is way too thick!

  1. The casing is too thin. You need to go back to the casing that just comes right off. With the new casing, I have to use a potato peeler to get it off and this causes too much work and too much waste. Otherwise it’s like eating a very thin layer of plastic. Bring back thd old, easy peel casing

  2. The casing is meant to come off. It’s inedible. I eat this garlic sausage ALL. THE. TIME. I like it sliced right off the coil as a snack. And I also love slicing it up and frying it. I like that the sugar is minimal. The fat and salt are of no concern to me and I find the combination of the two in this garlic sausage to be perfect. I actually add more salt to it occasionally, especially when I fry it and eat it with fried eggs. It’s good on crackers with a slice of cheese and a pickle (if you eat crackers, which I do not). When I ate bread, a garlic sausage and mustard sandwich was a nice treat.

  3. I agree…few things are more gross than sausage casings that are more like sausage condoms than casings. I have had that happen with some brands of breakfast sausage and was told by the maker when I contacted them, that perhaps I had cooked the sausage at too high of a heat. When I tried it another time, I baked instead of fried them and it made a huge difference! Just a thought you might like to try with that second piece you still have….
