Costco Kirkland Signature Chicken and Waffle Kit Review

Chicken and waffles is an intriguing combination of crispy, breaded fried chicken and fluffy, slightly sweet waffles. If you’ve never tried it before, now’s your chance—Costco has just introduced the Kirkland Signature Chicken and Waffle Kit in the pre-made meal section. I rarely eat chicken and waffles, but I’ve loved it every time I’ve had it at a restaurant, so I was excited to see how the Costco version would compare!

Location in Store

This is located in the refrigerated, pre-made deli section at Costco, near the Kirkland Signature Bacon Mac and Cheese and the Kirkland Signature Creole Style Jambalaya. The item number is 12432.

Taste

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. My parents, who have never had chicken and waffles before and kind of scoffed at the idea, also really liked it. The chicken has a slight maple flavor to it, which is nice. The chicken got quite crispy after baking it in the oven, but I want to point out that there’s quite a bit of breading.

The quality of the chicken seems decent; I didn’t find any gristle or bones. The waffles are tasty, with a nice amount of crispness on the outside and softness on the inside. The waffle is slightly on the dry side, so you could add maple syrup, but there’s already a maple flavor in it.

Be warned that the hot honey that comes with the meal is very spicy! The dressing that comes in the kit for the coleslaw has a strong, tangy, cool dill flavor that reminds me of the Taylor Farms Dill Pickle Salad Kit.

Eating all the components together is a bit overwhelming because of how strong the flavors are. I’d eat the coleslaw on its own. I really like the flavors but found the chicken and waffles just a tad too sweet; I might have preferred to have the maple flavor just as maple syrup.

Cost

The cost of the chicken & waffle kit is $16.99 per kilogram, and the cost per tray depends on the weight. I paid $21.24 Canadian for my particular tray, which doesn’t seem bad considering I got four large pieces of chicken.

Convenience

The chicken and waffle kit needs to be kept refrigerated and has a best-before date that’s four days from the day it was packaged. There are cooking instructions for heating the kit using either the oven or an air fryer.

I chose to use my oven. I baked the chicken for 20 minutes to get it extra crispy and ensured the internal temperature had reached 165 degrees Fahrenheit. The waffles only took five minutes in the oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

The kit has everything you need to make a balanced meal and is really simple to heat up. My toddler liked the waffle a lot but wasn’t so sure about the chicken.

Nutrition

Calories

One quarter of the tray contains 780 calories, 39 grams of fat, 72 grams of carbohydrates, four grams of fiber, 29 grams of sugar, 32 grams of protein, and 890 milligrams of sodium. That’s a nice amount of protein, but the calories, sugar, fat, and carbohydrates are all quite high.

Ingredients

The ingredients list is pretty long due to there being so many components in this meal. There are a lot of unhealthy ingredients I don’t love to see, such as artificial flavor, palm oils, flavorings, and sugars. Ingredients like this are kind of to be expected, though, when buying a pre-made meal like this from a grocery store. The chicken and waffle kit contains milk, egg, wheat, soy, and mustard. It may contain fish, molluscs, crustaceans, tree nuts, peanuts, and sesame.

Overall

Give it a try!

This is a unique meal to see at Costco and was actually pretty tasty! I wouldn’t buy it all the time, but I’d have no problem eating it again.
