This Kirkland Signature Apple Cinnamon Cake from Costco has caught my eye on my last few visits. I’m usually more of a chocolate cake kind of girl, and an apple cinnamon cake seemed a bit odd to me, so I didn’t pick one up until now. Read the review below to find out whether I regretted taking a chance on it!

Location in Store
This cake is located in the refrigerated bakery section at Costco, beside the Kirkland Signature Tuxedo Cake and the Kirkland Signature Carrot Cheesecake. The item number is 1973663.

Taste
This cake tastes like a cross between apple pie and cake. There’s more cinnamon flavor than apple, despite there being chunks of apple in the cake. The chunks of apple seem like the peel is still on, and their texture is quite fibrous.

The cake isn’t very flavorful and isn’t very sweet. The sweetest part is the caramel on top. There’s also a cinnamon whipped cream on the cake that’s quite nice.
I wish they used the cinnamon whipped cream between the layers of cake, but instead there’s a cream filling that lacks flavor. The cream between the layers has just a light hint of cinnamon.

The cake itself is a bit on the dry side and tastes like a spice cake. It reminds me a bit of carrot cake. My parents kept commenting that the apple cake tasted like cold apple crisp.
Cost
This cake is pretty large, but it isn’t cheap. It costs $23.99 CAD and could easily feed 12 to 14 people (with small slices). After trying it, I don’t think it’s worth $24.

Convenience
The cake needs to be kept refrigerated and has a best-before date that’s five days from when I purchased it. I served it for dessert, and everyone thought it was okay but not great. I probably wouldn’t freeze it, because the chunks of apple in the cake may change texture after thawing.

Nutrition
Calories
I’m still working on getting the exact nutrition facts for the cake from Costco, but I’m guessing one-twelfth of the cake has about 300 calories, 15 grams of fat, and 20 grams of sugar. I’ll post the nutrition facts as soon as I find them.
Ingredients
The ingredients list seems pretty typical for a store-bought cake. It includes the usual less-healthy ingredients like vegetable oil, carrageenan, artificial flavors, and lots of preservatives and additives. The cake contains milk, egg, soy, wheat, barley, oats, and sulfites. It may contain tree nuts, peanuts, sesame, rye, and triticale.

Overall
Walk on by!
This apple cinnamon cake is a strange combination of flavors and is below-average quality for a Costco cake. There are much better cake options at Costco.
