Costco Portofino Cheesy Bread Sticks Review

Breadsticks like these Portofino ones from the Costco bakery remind me of my childhood lunches. I used to eat cheese bread like this regularly as a kid, and I loved it. Costco also carries their Kirkland Signature Cheese Buns, which I’ve tried and enjoyed, but I wanted to give this Portofino brand a try. Unfortunately, I regret this purchase, read on to find out why.

Location in Store

These are located in the bakery section at Costco, near the Kirkland Signature Cookies & Cream Swirl Danish and the Kirkland Signature Butter Croissant. The item number is 1966646.

Taste

These are pretty disappointing. They’re not terrible, but they’re very bland. The bread without cheese just tastes very blah, and there isn’t enough cheese on them.

The texture is also quite dry, though they may be slightly less dry if you heat them in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Overall, they’re basically very plain, ordinary white bread with a bit of cheese added to make them slightly salty.

Cost

The 780-gram container costs $9.99 Canadian, which seems very reasonable, but after trying these, I wouldn’t say it’s a steal of a deal.

Convenience

The cheese sticks come in a resealable plastic container that can easily be popped into the freezer if you’re not going to eat them before the best-before date. The best-before date on my container was only five days from the day I bought them, so you’re better off freezing them right away.

You may enjoy these paired with a marinara dip or ranch. I also think they’d taste a bit better heated. Cheese breadsticks make a great side with pasta, salad, or soup.

Nutrition

Calories

One breadstick contains 200 calories, five grams of fat, 30 grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, two grams of sugar, eight grams of protein, and 370 milligrams of sodium. They’re definitely not low in calories or carbohydrates, but most bread products aren’t!

Ingredients

I dislike seeing preservatives and additives like calcium propionate and L-cysteine hydrochloride. Bread made at home or at a standalone bakery may not require these additional, unhealthy ingredients. The breadsticks contain milk and wheat and may contain egg, mustard, soy, and sulphites.

Overall

Walk on by!

The texture is too dry, and there isn’t enough flavor for me to want to purchase these again.
