Costco Kirkland Signature Cookies & Cream Swirl Danish Review

When I first spotted the new Kirkland Signature Cookies & Cream Swirl Pastries at Costco, I thought they were cinnamon buns! They might look like cinnamon buns, but after trying them, I can definitely say they have a true cookies-and-cream flavor. Did I like this new Costco bakery item enough to buy it again? Find out by reading on!

Location in Store

These are located in the bakery section near the Kirkland Signature Croissants and the Kirkland Signature Muffins. The item number is 1761543.

Taste

The first thing I noticed when picked one up is that they’re fairly heavy and dense. The dough is kind of flaky looks similar to a croissant, but they’re heavier than a croissant.

The dough also tastes similar to a croissant; it’s buttery but not overly flavorful. It’s more moist than flaky, I think because the cookie mix and icing kind of adds moisture that soaks in over time.

The cookie flavor comes from the cake-like mixture spread between the layers and the cream flavor comes from the icing. The cookie mix has a mild but enjoyable chocolate flavor. The icing is super sweet without a ton of flavor beyond that. On its own, I didn’t like the icing at all, but it’s okay as part of the overall pastry. I wish it wasn’t so sweet.

If the idea of a cookies and cream version of a cinnamon danish appeals to you, you’ll probably enjoy these swirls. Personally I found them a bit too sweet, but they were better than I thought they’d be.

Cost

There are six large pastries in the container, which costs $12.99 Canadian at Costco. That works out to just over two dollars per swirl, which seems a bit expensive after trying them. Still, it’s cheaper than buying a sweet treat from a bakery or coffee shop.

Convenience

I’m not sure whether these are better suited for breakfast or as a snack or dessert—probably a snack or dessert since they’re so sweet! The best-before date on the package is three days from the day they were packaged. I think kids will probably enjoy these, but as an adult, I found them a little too sweet and somewhat artificial-tasting.

Nutrition

Calories

One cookies & cream swirl contains 720 calories, 34 grams of fat, 91 grams of carbohydrates, two grams of fibre, 36 grams of sugar, 12 grams of protein, and 670 milligrams of sodium. I’m shocked that even the sodium is high! These are definitely high in calories, fat, carbohydrates, and sugar, and should be avoided if you’re diabetic.

Ingredients

The ingredients list is packed with unhealthy items, which isn’t surprising. The main offenders are sugar, glucose-fructose, artificial flavor, palm oil, and various chemical additives and preservatives. The swirls contain wheat, egg, milk, and soy, and may also contain peanuts, tree nuts, and sesame.

Overall

Give it a try!

These actually taste pretty good, but they’re very sweet, and you can tell right after taking a bite that they’re not exactly good for you.
