Costco Kirkland Signature Sourdough Bread Review

Sourdough bread is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its beloved tangy flavor, chewy texture, and lower glycemic index compared to many other breads. I love buying sourdough from local bakeries, but I’m often a bit skeptical of grocery store versions. Despite that hesitation, I decided to pick up the Kirkland Signature Pane Roma Sourdough and Kirkland Signature Wholesome Grains Sourdough to give them a try. Read the review below to find out what I thought of each one!

Location in Store

Both kinds of sourdough are beside each other in the bakery section of Costco. Near the Kirkland Signature Almond Croissants and Kirkland Signature Cinnamon Danish Rolls. The item number is 1973050 for the Pane Roma and 1973726 for the Wholesome Grains.

Taste

Pane Roma Sourdough

I really enjoy the Pane Roma Sourdough. It’s very soft and fluffy, but also fairly dense. The outside crust is nice and chewy. The bread is actually more sweet than sour and doesn’t have a strong tang like many sourdough breads do. It’s hearty and quite filling!

Wholesome Grains Sourdough

This bread has tons of flax seeds, sunflower seeds, and sesame seeds, as well as barley, rye, and oat flakes on the outside. It’s very hearty and filling, and the seeds and grains add some extra crunch. The crust is nice and chewy, while the inside of the bread is soft, fluffy, and dense. I also find this bread to be more sweet than sour in flavor.

Cost

Both loaves are really large. The Pane Roma Sourdough costs $6.49 CAD at Costco, and the Wholesome Grains Sourdough costs $6.99 CAD. I think both prices are extremely reasonable considering how much bread you get.

Convenience

Both kinds of sourdough have a best-before date that’s two days from the date they were packaged. You could slice and freeze the sourdough when you get it home so you can use it as needed. This sourdough is great toasted, served fresh with soup, pasta, or salad, and would also be perfect for making sandwiches.

The ingredients list for both loaves is pretty similar except the Wholesome Grains Sourdough has additional seeds/grains. Both loaves have a pretty short and sweet ingredients list. Overall

Give it a try!

I really liked both kinds of sourdough and wouldn’t hesitate to buy it again! Since the loaves were so large I shared some with my parents who also really enjoyed them.
