There’s been a change to the Costco Kirkland Signature muffins, they’re now smaller, more expensive and contain buttermilk and butter. I’ve previously reviewed the jumbo Costco muffins that everyone seems to love, and now I’m excited to try these new ones. Read on as I sample all four varieties of the new Kirkland Signature Buttermilk Muffins and share my thoughts!

Location in Store
These are located in the bakery section of Costco, near the Kirkland Signature Sourdough Bread and Kirkland Signature Croissants. The item number is 198990 for the blueberry muffins, 1989911 for the almond poppyseed muffins, 1989901 for the chocolate muffins and 1989902 for the cranberry orange muffins.

Taste
I tried all four flavors of muffins and wrote notes on each one. Here’s what I thought!

Almond Poppy Seed Muffins with Butter and Buttermilk
This flavor has slivered almonds on top that add a nice bit of texture. It has a pleasant level of sweetness and a very mild almond flavor.

The poppy seed flavor is a little less noticeable, but it’s there and well balanced with the almond flavor. The muffins are decently moist, though just a tad dry

Blueberry Muffins with Butter and Buttermilk
The blueberry flavor is fairly plain, with a mild, sweet vanilla taste in the dough. Most of the blueberry flavor comes from the berries themselves, but there aren’t very many of them at all.

I’d appreciate at least twice as many. The muffins were also just a bit dry.

Cranberry Orange Muffins with Butter and Buttermilk
This is my favorite flavor of the four! It has a lovely orange flavor, while the cranberry taste comes from the individual cranberries throughout.

The muffins also have a crumble on top that adds a bit of sweetness and texture. I really enjoy the cranberry-orange combination. For some reason, there seem to be more cranberries in these than blueberries in the blueberry muffins.

Double Chocolate Muffins with Butter and Buttermilk
The chocolate muffins seem drier than the other flavors, I wish they were a bit moister. They’re very chocolaty and packed with chocolate chips.

To me, they’re more like a chocolate cupcake without the icing. They’re good, but don’t really feel like a muffin, more like a piece of chocolate cake.

7/10
Cost
The muffins now cost $7.99 CAD for an eight-pack, which works out to $8.98 per kilogram. One pack of six muffins weighs 0.890 kilograms. Previously, the muffins were $9.99 CAD for two 1.100-kilogram packs of six jumbo muffins, so the price has increased.

Convenience
The muffins have a best-before date that’s four days from the day they’re packaged. I recommend freezing them if you’re not going to eat them right away to prevent them from becoming soggy or stale.

These are definitely a sweet treat, making them perfect for a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack with coffee or tea. The chocolate ones could easily be served as dessert with some vanilla ice cream since they’re more like cake!

Nutrition
I love the taste of muffins but don’t love that they’re usually very high in calories, carbohydrates and sugar and low in protein in fiber. I always find I’m hungry shortly after eating them!

Almond Poppy Seed Muffins with Butter and Buttermilk Calories and Ingredients
One 111-gram muffin contains 430 calories, 24 grams of fat, 47 grams of carbohydrates, two grams of fibre, 24 grams of sugar, eight grams of protein and 520 milligrams of sodium. Although the muffins do contain buttermilk and butter they still contain unhealthy oils like palm oil, vegetable oil and canola oil.

Blueberry Muffins with Butter and Buttermilk Calories and Ingredients
One 109-gram muffin contains 370 calories, 20 grams of fat, 42 grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, 20 grams of sugar, six grams of protein and 480 milligrams of sodium. I’m glad to see that real blueberries are listed as an ingredient but I’m not a fan of artificial flavors also being an ingredient.

Cranberry Orange Muffins with Butter and Buttermilk Calories and Ingredients
One 115-gram muffin contains 370 calories, 20 grams of fat, 44 grams of carbohydrates, two grams of fibre, 21 grams of sugar, six grams of protein and 460 milligrams of sodium.

The muffins contain real cranberries which I appreciate but I don’t love that they added food coloring to the “orange compound”. There also seems to be quite a few preservatives and additives in the muffins which are not something you’d add if you were baking muffins at home.

Double Chocolate Muffins with Butter and Buttermilk Calories and Ingredients
One 111 gram muffin contains 420 calories, 22 grams of fat, 51 grams of carbohydrates, three grams of fibre, 33 grams of sugar, seven grams of protein and 380 milligrams of sodium. Of note, these are the only muffins that don’t contain artificial flavor, the other free flavors do.

Overall
Give it a try!
These aren’t the most amazing muffins I’ve tried, and they surely aren’t very nutritious but they’re not bad. If you’re craving muffins, they’re less expensive than buying muffins from a bakery or coffee shop!
