The Costco in Maui had an impressive selection of ready-to-heat meals and marinated meats that we don’t have here in Canada. This Kirkland Signature Flank Steak with Lime Cilantro Marinade was one product I hadn’t seen before, and since my husband loves steak and doesn’t mind cilantro, we decided to give it a try. After cooking and tasting it, we were pleasantly surprised by both the quality and flavor. Find out what impressed us so much by reading the review below!

Location in Store
The steak with marinade is located in the refrigerated pre-made meal section of Costco near the Kirkland Signature Burger Steak with Gravy and the Kirkland Signature Enchilada Bake. The item number is 40421.
Taste
I cooked the steak for about 11 minutes over medium heat on the barbecue and ended up cooking it a bit more than I had hoped. I was aiming for the minimum recommended temperature (145°F), but it came out closer to 155–160°F. Somehow it still looked about medium rare when I cut into it, so I was happy with the result. I poured the sauce over the steak after cooking it. The sauce is double-cupped to help prevent contamination.

The steak was fairly tough and chewy, but the flavor was nice. The lime-cilantro marinade and sauce (which I think were the same) add a mild but pleasant taste. Honestly, all I could really taste was a hint of lime and a well-seasoned steak. The meat is the star, which is a good thing.

I didn’t mind the fact that the steak was a bit chewy. I expected that with flank steak. The quality of the meat was good, with no gristle that I noticed.

Cost
The steak costs $14.99 per pound, and my steak weighed 1.96 pounds, so I paid $29.38 for the flank steak with marinade. Beef is quite expensive these days, so that doesn’t seem ridiculously overpriced, but I do think you’re definitely paying for the convenience.

Convenience
There are cooking instructions for preparing the steak on the barbecue or in the oven. For food safety, the label recommends cooking the steak to a minimum internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit.

The steak and marinade have a best-before date that is three days after the packaging date, and I wouldn’t recommend freezing them.

You could use the steak to make tacos or fajitas, or serve it with roasted potatoes, Mexican rice, or a salad. The cilantro-lime marinade reminds me of Mexican food, but we simply served it with potatoes!

Calories
A 112-gram serving contains 190 calories, 10 grams of fat, 300 milligrams of sodium, 6 grams of carbohydrates, 0 grams of fiber, 4 grams of sugar, and 18 grams of protein. These nutrition facts include the marinade that comes with the steak.

Ingredients
I was surprised to see shrimp base and whey on the ingredients list. These ingredients are likely part of the seasoning or marinade. The product uses gluten-free soy sauce, which I’m sure many people who are gluten intolerant will appreciate.
The flank steak with lime cilantro marinade contains crustaceans/shellfish, milk, sesame, and soy. It may also contain wheat, egg, tree nuts, and fish because it is processed in a facility that handles foods containing these allergens.

Overall
Give it a try!
I would buy this again if they started selling it here in Canada. The flavor of the steak and marinade was nice and the quality of the meat seemed good.
