Protein-packed and versatile, but too salty!

I’m always looking for healthy, easy dinner options at Costco! I picked up the Skoulakis Chicken Greek Style Chicken Souvlaki Skewers when they were on sale last week!
The skewers are VERY heavily seasoned and flavorful! The chicken was on the edge of being too salty for my taste, even after spritzing lemon juice over the skewers. On the plus side, the quality of the chicken was quite good; we didn’t come across any gristle or fat and it was quite tender. Although these are “Greek-style” chicken skewers, I didn’t taste any particularly powerful distinct seasoning or flavors that would make them difficult to pair with anything. You could serve them with a salad or some rice and vegetables or even put use the pieces of chicken in a pita with some hummus.
The regular price for the Skoulakis Chicken Greek Style Chicken Souvlaki Skewers is $16.99 Canadian, but I managed to buy them on sale for $3.50 off. There are eight chicken skewers in the pack. On sale I think they’re a reasonable deal, but the regular price seems a little high for the amount of chicken that you get, especially since they’re not overly convenient to make.
The chicken comes raw, so that’s obviously less convenient than if they were pre-cooked skewers. However, they do come marinated and ready to cook, so you don’t need to do much to get them ready. You can choose to broil, pan fry or barbecue them. We decided to use the barbecue. The skewers need to be kept refrigerated until they’re cooked, but the best before date is about a month from the purchase date. We were surprised that they would keep so long in the fridge. My husband did the barbecuing. The first thing that he noticed was that getting the skewers out of the package is a bit of a pain – peeling open the slippery package without spilling the skewers was a challenge, and a couple of the skewers lost pieces of chicken in the process. Rather that trusting the instructions on the package, he checked the temperature of the meat throughout the grilling process using an instant read thermometer. It was a good thing he did – he ended up having to leave the skewers on for nearly twice as long as the high end of the time range specified on the package (using the recommended temperature setting). It’s possible our barbecue runs a little cooler than the one they used to come up with the instructions, but 24 minutes instead of 13 minutes is a big difference! Finally, I’ll mention that we found the meat slightly difficult to remove from the skewers.
One skewer contains 140 calories, three grams of fat, 29 grams of protein, zero grams of fibre, zero grams of sugar and 460 milligrams of sodium. That’s a ton of protein and not many calories or much fat! The sodium obviously isn’t ideal. The ingredients list also looked pretty straight forward to me other than the corn maltodextrin.
We enjoyed the Skoulakis Chicken Greek Style Chicken Souvlaki Skewers with the Costco Kirkland Signature Mediterranean Salad and some extra veggies and it was delicious! Try out this combination if you’re looking for a tasty but easy Mediterranean-themed meal!
