Costco Kirkland Signature Cheese Swirl Review

The Costco bakery usually has some pretty solid offerings, and I love cheese—so when I saw the brand-new Kirkland Signature Cheese Swirls, I had to try them ASAP. They smelled amazing in the package, so I expected them to taste just as good, but I was sadly disappointed. Find out why below!

Location in Store

The cheese swirls are located in the bakery section at Costco near the Kirkland Signature Croissant and Kirkland Signature Palm Leaves. The item number is

Taste

I really like the Kirkland Signature Cheese Buns, so I had high hopes for these cheese swirls but ended up feeling disappointed. They’re kind of like a cheese danish or cheese croissant, but they’re neither light and fluffy nor flaky—they’re very dense and soggy in the middle.

The cheese flavor is noticeable, and I like it, but I can’t get past the heavy texture. I also find the cheese swirls extremely salty—I love salt, but these are over-the-top salty! I can’t say I would buy these again.

Cost

There are eight cheese swirls in the plastic resealable container, which costs $14.99 Canadian. That’s less than two dollars per cheese swirl, which isn’t overly expensive—but it’s not cheap either. If you like cheese and bread, I’d recommend spending the money on the Kirkland Signature Cheese Buns instead.

Convenience

The cheese swirls come in a plastic container that reseals. The best-before date is two days from the packaging date.

If you’re not going to finish the cheese swirls before the best-before date, you could easily freeze them. These aren’t really suitable for making sandwiches or using as burger buns—they’re more of a pastry meant to be eaten on their own.

Nutrition

Calories

One cheese swirl contains 350 calories, 19 grams of fat, 33 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fibre, 3 grams of sugar, 12 grams of protein, and 810 milligrams of sodium. That’s quite a bit of sodium and fat. The carbs aren’t as high as I expected, and I appreciate that one bun has 12 grams of protein.

Ingredients

The ingredient list is pretty typical for a store-bought bakery cheese pastry. There are some ingredients I don’t love, like palm oil, natural flavour, and added sugars. The cheese swirls contain wheat, milk, and egg, and may contain sesame, rye, barley, oats, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, and mustard.

Overall

Walk on by!

These aren’t as good as I hoped they’d be! They’re very dense, heavy, and too salty. I also found the middle of the swirls to be a bit soggy.
