Location in Store

These puff pastry bites are located in the freezer section at Costco near the Cuisine Adventures Mini Sausages and the Partini Creamy Stuffed Mushrooms. The item number is 1448167.

Taste

There are four different puff pastry flavors in the box, and I tried each one with my parents and took notes.

Roasted Red Pepper & Cheddar has a sweet red pepper flavor at first, with the cheddar coming through afterward. The combination is really nice, and the pastry is flaky, crispy, and delicate.

Spinach & Parmesan has a crisp crust from the parmesan on the outside. The spinach and parmesan work well together, and the spinach doesn’t taste overly earthy, which I like. The flavors are well balanced.

Creamy Mushroom isn’t as crispy as the others. It’s a bit softer because it’s loaded with mushroom filling. The mushroom flavor is strong and earthy, and the filling is quite creamy. This one isn’t my favorite, but if you like mushrooms, you’ll probably enjoy it.

Onion & Ricotta has a sweet onion flavor with a hint of richness from the ricotta. The pastry is crisp, flaky, and delicate. I liked this one too!

Cost

The 792-gram box costs $15.99 (CAD). Inside, there are 48 puff pastry pieces total, with four different flavors packaged in sets of 12.

Convenience

The puff pastry needs to be kept frozen, and the best-before date is about 13 months from when I purchased it. I followed the cooking directions and baked the pastries in my oven at 400°F for 19 minutes. They came out golden brown, hot, and crispy.

These are great as an appetizer, brunch option, or snack. They’re so flavorful that they don’t need any dips or sauces.

Nutrition

Calories

The nutrition facts vary depending on the puff pastry flavor. Five pieces contain 260–270 calories, 16–18 grams of fat, 20–27 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of fibre, 2–3 grams of sugar, 5–6 grams of protein, and 310–320 milligrams of sodium. The calories, fat, and sodium are pretty much what I expected, considering these are loaded with oil and cheese.

Ingredients

Unfortunately, these puff pastry bites aren’t made with real butter, they’re made with a palm and canola oil shortening. That said, the rest of the ingredients don’t seem too bad. There doesn’t appear to be a long list of additives or preservatives, and they don’t seem overly high in sugars or artificial ingredients. The puff pastry bites contain milk, egg, wheat, and sulphites.

Overall

Give it a try!

The roasted red pepper & cheddar puff pastry is my favorite. I like the spinach & parmesan and the onion & ricotta too but I didn’t enjoy the mushroom. I don’t love strong mushroom flavors.
