Everything you need to know about the Costco Chicken Pot Pie – including nutrition information!

The Costco Kirkland Signature Chicken Pot Pie has been around for a long time. The current version has been around for a while now, but it used to be slightly different. You can see my review of the Costco Kirkland Signature Chicken Pot Pie from 2018 here.

Taste

I absolutely love chicken pot pie. It’s my idea of a perfect comfort food. I’ve had Costco’s version many times now, and it’s pretty tasty. It’s a straightforward take on a simple dish. There’s a bottom crust filled with a mixture of sauce/gravy, chicken, onions, potatoes and vegetables (carrots, peas and corn) and covered with a top crust.

The crust on top of the pie always seems to come out golden, crispy, flaky and delicious. The bottom crust can be kind of inconsistent. I’ve had some Costco chicken pot pies where it seemed very thick and was slightly underbaked/soggy, but others where it’s come out nice and crisp (like in my video review!).

The gravy/sauce is a little on the salty side, but it’s creamy and seasoned well. I really enjoy it, but people who don’t like a lot of salt might be turned off. The chicken in the pot pies generally seems to be pretty good quality.

Basically it’s large chunks of all-white chicken breast meat. I can’t recall ever finding a gristly or gross piece. There’s also a good amount of chicken in each pot pie.

Is the Costco Chicken Pot Pie good?

Costco’s Chicken Pot Pie is good, but there are a few things I’d tweak if it were up to me! Even though there’s a good amount of chicken in the pie, I could always do with more! I also wish there were more vegetables (carrots, peas and corn) in the filling.

The filling is heavy on potatoes, but light on the actual vegetables. I only ever seem to find a few pieces of vegetables in my slice of the pot pie.

Finally, as I mentioned earlier, the bottom crust can be hit or miss. I don’t know if this is because there’s some variation in the individual pot pies and some are made with a thicker bottom, but it’s much better when it turns out crisp rather than soft/soggy!

One final note – this is the Canadian version of the Costco Chicken Pot Pie. The U.S. version is a bit different – it’s bigger and has a lattice top. I’m guessing the filling is similar, but I haven’t tried the U.S. version, so I don’t know for sure.

Cost

I paid $10.49 Canadian the last time I purchased the Costco Kirkland Signature Chicken Pot Pie (regular price). This seems really reasonable for a pie that could easily serve four to six adults!

The pie measures about nine and a half inches in diameter. You don’t need to make a bunch of sides with it as it has all the food groups in one dish.

Convenience

The Kirkland Signature Chicken Pot Pie is very easy to cook. First, you preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit, remove the plastic lid and base, put the pie on a baking tray, cover the pie in aluminum foil and place the baking tray with the covered pie on the bottom rack of your oven. You bake the pie for 50 to 55 minutes.

After baking the pie for 50 to 55 minutes, remove the aluminum foil and bake it for an additional 5 to 10 minutes (this is how the top crust gets nice and golden brown).

Finally, the package recommends using a thermometer to make sure the internal temperature of the pie is at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

The best-before date on my Chicken Pot Pie was seven days from the date it was packaged on, so you can buy it a few days before you want to cook it. To keep the pie fresh for longer, you can also freeze it, then thaw it overnight in your refrigerator the night before you plan to bake it.

I’ve done this before, and it doesn’t affect the taste or texture of the pie much. Another option is to freeze pieces of the pie after you’ve cooked it, but the crust will definitely be a little soft after you reheat your pieces.

Calories

One-eighth of the Kirkland Signature Chicken Pot Pie contains 390 calories, 23 grams of fat, 410 milligrams of sodium, 31 grams of carbohydrates, two grams of fibre, three grams of sugar and 15 grams of protein. The relatively high amount of protein is definitely the bright spot here. It’s partly what makes this dish so filling.

Ingredients

I’m not a huge fan of this list of ingredients. There are a lot of unnatural-sounding ingredients in this chicken pot pie. I suppose that’s to be expected in a convenience meal like this.

I always find it a bit offputting when I look at the “may contain” part of the list and see totally random things – fish, shellfish, crustaceans and peanut in this case. I know this is probably just related to the other types of foods made in the kitchen where the pie is packaged, but it still seems weird to me!

The Costco Kirkland Signature Chicken Pot Pie is a very convenient comfort meal. Make a quick side salad or side vegetable and you’ve got an easy dinner. It’s definitely not what I would call a healthy meal, but most of my favorite comfort foods aren’t exactly healthy!

  1. I have this pie in my fridge and plan on baking it tomorrow. I like that the top crust is easy to remove as I’ll just throw that part out to eat less crust. I then will add a can of beans to the pie to mix and eat with the rest of it to get a bit more nutrition.

  3. The pie i bought here in the states was a whopping 5 pounds and cost $27.00. As many have said, “Too salty” after the first bite or two. There is plenty of chicken and carrots and peas, but there were no potatoes. The lattice crust left a lot to be desired – Marie Callender has it beat by a mile. The flavor is very oniony and is very similar to that of turkey dressing. The ingredients list has a lot of “extractives” whatever those are. I know for sure, I won’t be putting another one of these on my table.

  4. I have no idea where you people are getting their Costco chicken pot pies from. Mg family, extended family and quite a few friends love this pie!! I do, however cook it at a higher temperature (425) with tin foil placed loosely on top for the 55 minutes, then another 10 or so without the foil. Freaking delicious!!!👅😋

  5. I purchased today a chicken pot pie at Costco. Won’t buy it again. The crust is so greasy, as it cooks, you can see the fat boiling. The taste of the filling is pretty good though. It is unbelievable to see how long the list of ingredients is. I was very surprised to see this review. The lady is describing to us what ingredients she sees after taking one bite. At least, take off the top crust to see what’s underneath if you are reviewing the product. Not impressed.

  6. I agree, purchased pot pie for dinner….was tasteless crust, with glumpy gravy. 2 pieces of chicken in the whole pot pie, mostly chunks of potatoes, corn and carrots.

    Do not agree that this is an item to purchase at Costco.

    I’ve purchased many items to try at Costco and normallly they are really good.

    Used to love the Cilantro lime fresh shrimp salad….no it is chemical lime and the sauce should be light and not oily, it is very oily and tastes so bad due to the chemical lime flavor. Just another product not to purchase.

  7. I think the Canadians need to shop here in the states for their chicken pot pie.For one,they are larger and they have a open lattice pie crust on top. The crust is very tasty and not oily or greasy in your mouth. The pies are overstuffed .Sadly,they are seasonal and not available at certain times of the year.

  8. Worst pot pie ever!! Smells terrible and taste worse. Smells and Taste like some sort of chemical, perhaps a cleaning product. Day2 now and the whole house still reeks!

  9. I used to love this pie! I just ate it tonight for first time in over a year. I love onion, yet found it extremely oniony in a bad way. I do remember it being oniony before but not like this, it was like the onion wasn’t fresh, and there was a ton of it. Also there seemed to be a lot more gravy and less meat and veg. Unfortunately won’t be buying it again. (Located in Ontario)

  10. I used to buy one of these every couple of months or so but the last time (maybe in late 2019?) I noticed that the upper crust was totally different…. much lighter in texture and lacking in flavour, a lot less like homemade. Not good. I asked staff about it and they said I was right, the recipe had changed. So no more chicken pot pie at our house.

    Very disappointed in this product filled with a light creamy substance plus odd carrot and a Pea.One piece of chicken in the whole piece.Not very flavorful.

  12. We love these pies and usually purchase on every month or so.
    Last night, I found a 1 X 1/2 inch triangular piece of clear plastic in my piece.
    Needless we did not finish our dinners and I will be contacting them today for a refund.
    Update- called and they were suitably concerned, and advised would be immediately reviewing that batch. Sent me an incident report and will drop off with plastic piece today

  13. Instructions on Costco Chix Pot Pie says you can DEFROST the frozen pie in THE MICROWAVE. It is in an aluminum pie pan. Is this safe????

  14. I tried this last night. I agree that it is too salty. The big chunks of chicken were great but the flavor was a little bland. I heated a pizza stone up and set the pie pan on it. it Browned the bottom up some. This pie has a lattice top in California and cost a whopping $19.99 USD , kind of pricey, not sure I would buy again.

    • Fast forward 18 months. Our pie in Seattle cost $28.04 !!!!! Never thought I’d accuse Costco of price gouging, but come on. That’s ridiculous.

    • I am allergic to pork. I checked the the ingredients after reading your review about pork in the sauce and the ingredients list does not mention pork — just beef. I wonder if they have stopped adding pork.

  15. That’s the problem with most “ready to eat” or heat and serve products at Costco. Way too much artificial ingredients to satisfy the taste buds but aren’t healthy. Of course, you will find proponents stating there is no solid evidence proving this and that is unhealthy. This pie, judging by the pics provided alone suggest to me it’s unevenly baked. Your comment about the underside seems to validate my observation. Perhaps one can buy this only if they can tweak the baking of it. Better still, let’s see your chicken pot pie recipe? 😉

    • The worst chicken pie I have ever tasted. Too much onions. Vegetables not fresh but frozen. Very disappointed. I will not buy again.
