Costco Kirkland Signature Creamy Chicken Mushroom Bake Review

Every season, Costco introduces new options in their pre-made meal section, including the new Kirkland Signature Creamy Chicken Mushroom Bake. Although it didn’t look very appetizing, I decided to pick it up and review it after noticing several people pick it up, look at it, and then put it back. After trying the meal, I was left with one big complaint , find out what it is by reading below.

Location in Store

This is located in the refrigerated deli section at Costco, near the Kirkland Signature Loaded Pierogi Bake and the Kirkland Signature Beef & Pork Cabbage Rolls. The item number is 13577.

Taste

I’ll start with the positives: the sauce in this dish is really tasty. It’s salty with a mild mushroom flavor that I enjoyed. I also really like the chicken in the meal. There isn’t much of it, but the pieces that are included are tender, flavorful, and probably my favorite part of the dish.

The mushrooms are fine too — they’re seasoned well and pleasantly salty. My biggest complaint about this dish is the potatoes. They’re thinly sliced but undercooked and hard, with a raw taste to them. The meal is also very potato-heavy, and unfortunately, the potatoes are the weakest part.

The meal also doesn’t look very appetizing, which I think could turn a lot of people off. It’s definitely a different kind of dish, and I believe it would be much better if the potatoes were softer.

Cost

The cost of the Creamy Chicken Mushroom Bake depends on the weight of the tray you buy. It’s priced at $14.99 Canadian per kilogram, and my tray came to $24.10. After trying it, I feel that’s fairly expensive given how little chicken is actually included.

Convenience

This dish is very easy to heat up in the oven. The directions say to bake it for 50 to 60 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 185°F. I found that 55 minutes was enough to get mine to the required temperature.

This is meant to be an all-in-one meal with vegetables, carbs, and protein, but I’d still recommend adding a side of roasted vegetables or a fresh salad. It also pairs nicely with some crusty bread to soak up the extra gravy!

The meal needs to be kept refrigerated, and the best-before date is four days from the purchase date. I wouldn’t recommend freezing it, as the mushrooms would likely retain moisture and become soggy.

Nutrition

Calories

In 1/6th of the tray, there are 320 calories, 17 grams of fat, 25 grams of carbohydrates, three grams of fibre, five grams of sugar, 16 grams of protein, and 1,680 milligrams of sodium. The calories and fat are lower than I expected, but the sodium content is pretty shocking!

Ingredients

The ingredients list is fairly straightforward, though it includes some I’m not a fan of, such as canola oil, hydrolyzed soy protein, vegetable oil, and additives like disodium inosinate. The Creamy Chicken & Mushroom Bake contains milk, soy, wheat, mustard, and sulfites. It may also contain egg, fish, molluscs, crustaceans, tree nuts, peanuts, and sesame.

Overall

Walk on by!

The potatoes are still pretty raw and there’s barely any chicken. The mushrooms and gravy are good but that’s not enough to make me recommend this meal.
