Costco Kirkland Signature Loaded Pierogi Bake Review

Pierogis are a hearty, comforting meal that many people enjoy and I’m definitely one of them. On a recent trip to Costco, I spotted the Kirkland Signature Loaded Pierogi Bake in the pre-made meals section and decided to give it a try. It looked like the perfect combination of convenience and comfort food. Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to my expectations. Read on to find out why I won’t be picking it up again.

Location in Store

This is located in the refrigerated pre-made meal section at Costco. Near the Kirkland Signature Beef & Pork Cabbage Rolls and the Kirkland Signature Chicken Penne Alfredo. The item number is 12322.

Taste

The first thing I want to say about the pierogi bake is that it doesn’t look very appealing! The sausage is good but there’s not much of it. It tastes like a sweet garlic ham sausage but doesn’t have a strong garlic flavor.

The sausage is not strongly flavored or pungent tasting so I think that’s good. The pierogies are quite doughy although they have a cheese filling I wouldn’t say they taste cheesy.

I’ve had better pierogies but these are fine. The cream sauce that the pierogies are in tastes fine but doesn’t look great. The sauce doesn’t have a ton of flavor it tastes just like butter and cream.

There aren’t many chunks of bacon, I wish there were more. The bacon chunks are okay but are not super flavorful and a little on the artificial side. Overall the pierogi bake is fine tasting, if you enjoy pierogies and sausage it’s decent but not as good as other versions I’ve had.

Cost

The cost of the pierogi bake is dependent on the weight of the tray, it costs $14.49 per kilogram. I paid $21.94 Canadian for my particular tray which isn’t terrible but it’s not cheap. Especially since there isn’t much sausage.

Convenience

The pierogi bake needs to be kept refrigerated and the best before date is four days from when I purchased it. I don’t think I’d freeze the pierogi bake because I’d be worried that it would become pretty soggy.

This pierogi bake is basically a full meal deal, I’d recommend serving it with some veggies like peas or salad. To heat the pierogi bake you cover the top with aluminum foil and bake for 45 to 50 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Nutrition

Calories

1/5th of the tray contains 500 calories, 19 grams of fat, 61 grams of carbohydrates, zero grams of fibre, eight grams of sugar, 20 grams of protein and 980 milligrams of sodium. The pierogi bake is definitely heavy in calories, fat and carbohydrates.

Ingredients

The ingredients list is pretty much what you’d expect to see. There are a few ingredients I wish were eliminated such as canola oil and carrageen but the list is actually not as bad as I expected. There are a lot of whole, simple ingredients like green onion, cheddar cheese, potato, onion, bacon and olive oil.

Overall

Walk on by!

I’d rather have frozen pierogies with sausage on the side and no cream sauce. There’s so much heavy sauce that it makes the pierogi bake a bit soggy.
