Costco Kirkland Signature Mocha Crunch Cake Review

Costco’s bakery is known for carrying a variety of delicious cakes that work perfectly for celebrations, or simply as a treat at home. Their latest addition is the Kirkland Signature Mocha Crunch Cake, and I was excited to pick one up to try and review. Keep reading to find out my full thoughts on this new cake!

Location in Store

This mocha cake is located in the refrigerated bakery section at Costco, near the Kirkland Signature Mango Passion Fruit Mousse Cake and the Kirkland Signature New York Style Strawberry Cheesecake. The item number is 1973660.

Taste

This cake is very rich and sweet, but also tasty! I initially thought the decorations on top were coffee beans, but they’re actually small coffee-flavored chocolates. The top layer is a coffee/mocha-flavored white icing. It’s fairly sweet and has a slightly artificial taste.

Beneath the icing is a layer of chocolate cake, followed by mousse, another layer of chocolate cake, and then a crunchy layer with a hint of mocha flavor. The crunchy layer doesn’t add a ton of additional flavor to the cake but it does add texture. The cake tastes best when you eat all the layers together, as it creates a nice balance of coffee and chocolate.

Overall, this mocha cake is more like a chocolate cake with mocha as the secondary flavor. You definitely have to enjoy mocha or coffee-flavored desserts to fully appreciate it. The combination of chocolate and coffee works well together.

Cost

The Kirkland Signature Mocha Crunch Cake costs $19.99 Canadian, which I think is pretty reasonable for what you get. One cake could easily serve around 12 people if you’re cutting smaller slices. For a grocery-store dessert, it tastes surprisingly high quality, so the price feels fair to me.

Convenience

The cake needs to be stored in the refrigerator, and the best-before date is about five days from the packaging date. If you don’t think you’ll finish it in time, you can always pop it in the freezer to enjoy later.

This cake makes a great dessert to bring along to a potluck or serve at a dinner party. Of course, it’s just as nice to keep at home and enjoy with your family—or even treat yourself to a slice whenever you’re craving something sweet.

Nutrition

Calories

A 1/15th slice of the cake comes in at 300 calories, with 19 grams of fat, 29 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of fibre, 22 grams of sugar, 3 grams of protein, and 230 milligrams of sodium. Realistically though, I think most people (myself included!) would eat a bigger slice than that. So just keep in mind—this cake definitely isn’t light when it comes to calories, carbs, fat, or sugar.

Ingredients

The ingredients list is on the longer side and includes a few less-than-healthy items like palm kernel oil, canola oil, sugar, “flavor,” carrageenan, and some additives/preservatives. It also contains concentrated coffee, which is worth noting if you’re someone who avoids coffee. As for allergens, the cake has milk, egg, soy, wheat, and barley, and it may also contain sesame, triticale, oats, rye, peanuts, and tree nuts.

Give it a try!

I like this cake but I definitely prefer the Kirkland Singature Tuxedo Cake, it was nice to mix it up and try this one mocha cake though!

  1. Hmmm might have to give that a try. I’ve only had the tuxedo cake once and felt it was tasty overall but I usually avoid white chocolate.
    Thanks for your review.
    Cheers from Waterdown 😋
