I’ve always loved beets, but I had never tried a beet and onion salad before. So when I spotted the Paisley Farm version at Costco, I was curious to give it a try. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations, for one main reason. Keep reading to find out what it was!
Location in Store
This is located in the aisle with the other jarred vegetables such as the Tasso’s Papandoro Peppers, Mt. Olive Kosher Baby Dill Pickles and the Paisley Farm Bean Salad. The item number is 1880289.
Taste
This is too sweet for me, beets are sweet on their own but with balsamic and extra sugar they’re very sweet. I find the sweetness in this salad isn’t counteracted by any saltiness.
The onions are nice and crunchy but sweeter than the beets and have an almost ketchup flavor to me. The beets are soft but still firm enough but seem to be lacking the typically strong natural beet flavor, somehow it’s muted.
The salad has a hint of vinegar, but the overall flavor leans sweet. I served myself a bowl to sample but didn’t feel compelled to finish it.
Cost
This beet & onion salad comes in a two pack at Costco, each jar is one liter and you get two of them for $14.99 Canadian. Which in my opinion is a bit pricey but not totally outrageous when you came it to similar products.
Convenience
The salad needs to be stored in the refrigerator once opened. The sell-by date on the jar is a year and and a half from when I purchased it. The jar recommends serving this with goat cheese or feta on top of it.
The salad is a product of the USA. If you’re wondering what to serve this with, some ideas are roasted chicken, lamb or roast beef. I feel like it would work fine as a side salad for any grilled meats but I wouldn’t recommend it with burgers or hot dogs.

A 1/2 cup serving contains 70 calories, zero grams of fat, 15 milligrams of sodium, 14 grams of carbohydrates, zero grams of fibre, 14 grams of sugar and one gram of protein. Now I know why I felt like the salad needed some salt!
Ingredients
The ingredients list is quite short and simple. I don’t love that there’s sugar and “natural flavors” added because usually naturally flavors aren’t natural. The salad is gluten-free, dairy-free and soy-free.

Nutrition: 4/10 The high amount of sugar takes away from how healthy this could be.

Walk on by!
Personally I found this way too sweet and feel like it could be okay with a lot less sugar. I wouldn’t buy it again.
