Whenever I spot a new salad kit at Costco, I get excited because my family buys them weekly and eats one almost every night. On my last visit, I picked up the new Taylor Farms Pumpernickel Pretzel Salad Kit. Both my husband and I were surprised by how intense the flavor was, and there was no way my toddler was going to try it. Keep reading to find out why the flavor was a bit too much for us!

Location in Store
This is located in the refrigerated produce room at Costco, near the Taylor Farms Dill Pickle Salad Kit and the Eat Smart Sweet Kale Salad Kit. The item number is 1213.
Taste
The salad contains broccoli, green leaf lettuce, red cabbage, savoy cabbage, carrot, cheddar cheese–seasoned pretzel balls, smoked white cheddar, mustard vinaigrette dressing and a pumpernickel rye and sauerkraut crouton crumble.
Both my husband and I were really surprised by the flavors in this salad. I immediately thought it tasted strongly of horseradish, but we realized it’s actually the spicy Dijon mustard flavor from the dressing.

The dressing overpowers the other flavors in the salad and is actually pretty spicy/hot. I like the crunchy pretzel bites, but I can’t really tell that they’re cheddar-flavored, and the aged cheddar in the salad is overpowered by the dressing too.
The pretzel bites and rye crouton crumble mainly add texture rather than flavor. The vegetables themselves are nice and crunchy and taste fresh. The main issue with this salad is how strong the dressing is.
Cost
The salad kit comes in a two-pack and costs $8.49 Canadian, with each pack weighing 329 grams. Salad kits are much cheaper at Costco compared to my local grocery store. A single salad kit of the same weight at my grocery store costs $7.00 Canadian.

Convenience
This salad kit has everything you need to make a pretty deluxe, hearty salad! Sometimes, to stretch one kit a bit further, I’ll add extra veggies like carrots, cucumber, celery or tomatoes. The best-before date is about a week from when I purchased it, and it needs to be kept refrigerated.

Nutrition
Calories
One cup of the salad contains 150 calories, 11 grams of fat, 11 grams of carbohydrates, two grams of fibre, three grams of sugar, three grams of protein and 310 milligrams of sodium. The higher fat content comes from the cheese and dressing, so you could use less dressing and skip the cheese to lower the fat and calories.

Ingredients
The ingredients list is full of healthy vegetables, but it also includes some less healthy ingredients like palm oil, vegetable oil, canola oil, sugar and natural flavor. This salad contains wheat, barley, rye, mustard and milk.

Walk on by!
I usually like pretty much any salad kit I try but this one I just cannot get into. I won’t buy it again and struggled to finish my second kit in the two-pack.

I really liked the salad but not the dressing so I used creamy feta dressing instead and the salad was wonderful.
Couldn’t have written it better. This is exactly my thoughts when I had this. The flavours were too much.
