Do you have those foods that you only eat when your family isn’t around because nobody else in your house likes it? Well this is one of those foods for me. I love fish and chips but Sean definitely does not. He wasn’t home when I made these battered pacific cod fillets with the Costco Cavendish Farms Flavourcrisp Crispy Straight Fries.

Taste

You can choose to bake, barbecue or deep fry the fillets. I chose to bake them. The fillets definitely shrink when you cook them, which was slightly disappointing because I was hungry! The actual fish itself was moist, soft and cut easily with just a gentle push with a fork. Although these got somewhat crispy in the oven they weren’t as crispy on the outside as I would have liked and did taste like the batter was a little mushy in spots. They’re also quite oily! To be completely honest, I dabbed them with a paper towel to absorb some of the oil. They ARE tasty though especially if you like fish and chips. Most fish at restaurants is deep fried so considering I baked these they turned out pretty good.

Cost

The regular price of a bag of about 19 fillets is $19.99 Canadian at Costco. Definitely not cheap but not crazy expensive. Most of the seafood products at Costco or others grocery stores are more expensive than other frozen meat products.

Convenience

These are super easy and convenient to bake in the oven. The bag is resealable which is also nice. If you want to enjoy fish and chips at home, this is probably the next best option after takeout.

Nutrition

One filet is 160 calories, nine grams of fat. 300 mg of sodium, 11 grams of carbs and eight grams of protein. Considering that these shrink when you bake them I found it very easy to eat three! Yes, three! If you’re eating just one or two it’s not bad but if you’re eating five or six of these you’re looking at a bunch of calories, fat and sodium. Fish is a good source of fat though so don’t let the fat turn you off!

This is a huge bag so I won’t be repurchasing them anytime soon and I don’t eat fish and chips that often since Sean doesn’t care for it! It’s a good option for those that want to be able to enjoy fish and chips at home regularly.

  1. The High Liner English Fish from Costco is the best frozen fish we’ve ever had. It’s nice to have something convenient when I’m busy!!! It’s great tasting and NOT FISHY! Or oily. If people find it’s soggy, cook at a higher heat.( easy fix) thanks Costco!!!

  2. I used an air fryer to cook these, did anyone find that underneath the crispy exterior but above the fish (so basically the barrier between the fish and batter), that there was what seemed to look like small white strips of pliable plastic???! I don’t know if this is normal or if it was just my bag of fish, or something else.

  3. I use a stainless steel heat rated cookie/muffin cooling rack placed on top of a cookie sheet to catch the oil. I bake them on convection, this is like an air fryer I suppose? They get crisp and much of the oil drains off. You can flip them over after a few minutes…potato slices with a bit of olive oil and herbs or even Tater tots if you want to splurge and coleslaw on the side…laying On a cookie sheet without a few dabs from a paper towel? Yes plenty of oil. Good flavour…

  4. The High Liner English Style Cod Fillets are disgustingly oily. The batter barely crisps up after 7 minutes in the Ninja Airfryer with Grill (used basket. Not grill. Then let them soak on multiple layers of paper towels while I cooked some Cavendish Drive-Thru Fries. I put the fish back in the air fryer for 4 more minutes and they were still dripping in oil. They did not taste nice. 0/10 for mouthfeel.

  7. Have you tried these in an air fryer on an air fryer basket, with a drip tray underneath to catch the oil! Should help with the greasiness, softness of the batter, and crisp them up much better. Just bought a Kalorik Maxx Air Fryer Oven, from Costco.ca, and love it! GOING TO MASTER THIS BABY ALONG WITH MY INSTANT POT! THE TOP SMALL APPLIANCES OF THE PAST DECADE! (This air fryer is, $189.00 Canaidian, plus tax from Costco.ca! Roughly $213 total, after tax. Comes with all kinds of accessories, including a rotisserie. HERE’S THE COSTCO LINK: (Much more expensive elsewhere, by about $50 more, average! This is my 4th toaster oven, in 4 years, and it blows the first 3 away, with all the air fryer features, the added accessories, and the 21 presets, built in, also, has an oven light and French doors! FANTASTIC SO FAR! GOING TO BUY AND DO A FRESH ROTISSERIE CHICKEN TODAY!)
