Getting enough protein seems to be one of the biggest food trends right now, and it feels like everyone is trying to add more protein to their diet. Traditional bagels aren’t typically high in protein, so when I spotted these new Dempster’s Protein Bagels at Costco, I decided to give them a try. I find that foods with added protein that aren’t naturally high in protein can sometimes have an unpleasant taste or texture. Find out whether these bagels lived up to my expectations by reading the review below!

Location in Store
These are located in the bakery section of Costco near the Carbonaut Bagels and the BFree High Protein Tortillas. The item number is 2035752,
Taste
I really like these bagels because they taste like any everything bagel I’ve tried from a grocery store. I don’t notice any unpleasant taste from the soy, faba bean, or pea protein. The bagel has a nice chewy texture and flavor and tastes fairly salty.

The flavors are well balanced, with no overpowering or artificial taste. I honestly wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between these and any other everything bagel. They definitely aren’t as good as a bakery-bought bagel, but they taste similar to other grocery store bagels I’ve had.

Cost
The two-pack contains two separate bags of bagels, with five bagels in each bag. The two-pack costs $7.99 Canadian, which I think is quite reasonable. Products marketed as high in protein often cost a bit more, so the price seems fair. That works out to about 80 cents per bagel.

Convenience
These bagels are great toasted with butter or cream cheese, or you can use them to make a breakfast or deli sandwich. The best-before date is only nine days from when I bought them, so I recommend popping them in the freezer right away to keep them fresh and prevent them from going moldy.

Nutrition
Calories
One 90-gram bagel contains 230 calories, 2 grams of fat, 37 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of fibre, 5 grams of sugar, 18 grams of protein, and 310 milligrams of sodium. That’s quite a bit of protein for a bagel, and the fat, sugar, and sodium levels aren’t particularly high.

Ingredients
The protein in these bagels comes from a blend of soy, faba bean, and pea protein. I like that they contain a variety of whole ingredients, including toasted onion, black sesame seeds, garlic, and chia seeds. I don’t love seeing vegetable oil, additives, and preservatives on the ingredients list. The bagels contain wheat and may also contain milk, eggs, and sulphites.
