Costco De Milan Dubai Style Chocolate Panettone Review

Dubai-style chocolate is all the rage right now, so you can expect plenty of Christmas cookies and treats to feature it. The Costco De Milan Dubai-Style Chocolate Panettone features pistachio cream, kadayif pastry, chopped pistachios, and a chocolate coating, it sounds amazing, right? Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite as good as I hoped it would be Read on to find out why!

Location in Store

This is located in the seasonal aisle at Costco, near all the other Christmas treats like the David’s Butter Pecan Meltaways and the Kirkland Signature Crepes. The item number is 1952063.

Taste

This panettone is okay — not the best I’ve had, but it’s decent. The first thing I noticed after taking it out of the packaging was that it smelled a bit like liquor. I also think the cake has a slight liquor flavor, even though the ingredients don’t list any liquor in it.

You can see a small amount of pistachio cream in the center, which is slightly green in color. The cream tastes mostly sweet to me and lacks a true pistachio flavor. It’s not as good as the Pisti Pistachio Cream from Costco.

The panettone itself is very light and fluffy inside, with a slightly thicker—but not hard or chewy—crust. The chocolate coating on the outside, topped with pistachio shavings, is okay; it tastes more like dark chocolate.

The bread doesn’t have much flavor beyond being quite sweet with a hint of liquor. Its texture is light and similar to brioche. Overall, this panettone doesn’t have a strong chocolate flavor, it’s good, but not amazing.

Cost

The panettone is quite large and could probably serve about 12 people. It costs $18.99 Canadian, which isn’t cheap, but it’s a product of Italy, so that may contribute to it costing a bit more.

Convenience

The panettone comes in a plastic bag. Once opened, you can reseal the bag using an elastic band or clothespin. I think you could probably freeze the panettone without any issue if you’re not going to eat it right away, though I haven’t tried that.

This is definitely a sweet bread, so you could enjoy it for breakfast, as a snack, or for dessert. It pairs well with tea or coffee. You can eat it as is, or warm it in the toaster or oven and spread some butter on top.
