Costco Jane’s Lightly Dusted Sole Review

I enjoy trying different kinds of fish, but I usually stick to cod or salmon. When I came across Jane’s Lightly Dusted Sole at Costco, I decided to pick up a box to give it a try. I was drawn to the lemon and cracked pepper flavor, as well as the claim that it isn’t heavily coated. Read on to find out whether I’d buy it again!

Location in Store

This is located in the freezer section of Costco, near the Trident Alaska Salmon Burgers and the Kirkland Signature Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon. The item number is 2212759.

Taste

Before trying the sole, I noticed that it looked rather oily after cooking. When I cut into it, I also noticed that the breading separated from the fish and fell off, which was a minor inconvenience.

The sole itself is very mild in flavor and soft in texture. However, the pepper in the coating is quite strong. I didn’t like how peppery it was, it’s too much for my taste. The lemon flavor is quite subtle and is overpowered by the pepper.

I do like that the fish isn’t very salty and doesn’t taste or smell fishy. The outside was also nice and crispy, and there isn’t too much breading.

Cost

The one-kilogram box costs $16.99 CAD at Costco and includes at least eight sole fillets. That works out to just over two dollars per fillet, which seems quite reasonable.

Convenience

The sole needs to be kept frozen, and the best-before date is about eight months from the date of purchase. The box recommends cooking the fillets from frozen and provides instructions for air frying, pan frying, or baking them in the oven.

The box also clearly states not to microwave the sole. I decided to bake mine, and it turned out well. I recommend serving it with a side salad, rice, quinoa, or potatoes, along with some peas or roasted vegetables.

Nutrition

Calories

One sole fillet contains 230 calories, 11 grams of fat, 18 grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, two grams of sugar, 15 grams of protein, and 260 milligrams of sodium. I like that it’s low in sugar and sodium and provides a decent amount of protein per fillet.

Ingredients

Sole is known to be a nutrient-dense fish rich in vitamin B12 and selenium. The ingredients I don’t love seeing listed are canola oil, sugars, and natural flavour. The sole contains gluten and may contain soy, but it is dairy-free.

Overall

Give it a try!

If you like peppery fish, you might like this. My dad enjoyed the cracked pepper flavor. Personally, I found the pepper too strong but enjoyed the mild flavored, tender sole.
