Cabbage rolls are made with cooked cabbage wrapped around various fillings. Growing up we had homemade cabbage rolls once a year at Christmas and they had rice and beef in them, similar to these Costco Mamma Mia Bistro Cabbage Rolls! I was a little skeptical about buying frozen, pre-packaged cabbage rolls but I’m so glad I took a chance on these.
Location in Store
These cabbage rolls are located in the freezer section at Costco, near the Motor City Pizza Co. Pizza and the Pizza Roncadin. The item number is 322663.
Taste
Despite having a high amount of sodium they don’t taste that salty. Overall, I really like the flavor. There’s a hint of spice/heat but not much, just enough to give the cabbage rolls a little kick. I also notice a bit of sweetness, maybe in the sauce or the filling, I could do with a bit less sugar but I don’t mind it. I actually appreciate that the sweetness takes away the acidity from the tomatoes.
The meat is seasoned nicely and seems like decent quality meat, I didn’t get any gross or hard bits. The rice is the perfect texture, not too soggy. The rice is the perfect texture, not too soggy and the meat and rice filling is really flavorful and seasoned well.
The cabbage is fine, it’s regular cabbage not sour, it’s not great on its own so I recommend mixing each bite with a bit of filling. There’s quite a bit of filling in each cabbage roll. Some rolls have more filling than others.
Cost
The cabbage rolls cost $19.99 Canadian for two 1.13-kilogram trays containing six cabbage rolls. Each tray comes sealed in plastic. That’s not cheap for 12 cabbage rolls, so you’re definitely paying for convenience.
Convenience
I want to warn others not to make the same mistake I did, make sure you put your plastic tray of cabbage rolls on a cookie sheet. I did not and ended up with tomato sauce all over my oven trying to pull it out of the oven once cooked.
The cabbage rolls are cooked from frozen and you can either microwave them or bake them in the oven. I decided to bake them in the oven. I never really like heating plastic but the sauce and cabbage rolls were frozen solid so I didn’t have the option to move them to a glass baking dish.
The best before date on the cabbage rolls is just about a year from when I purchased them and they need to be kept frozen. These are convenient for Christmas or Thanksgiving dinner if you don’t want to go to the work of making cabbage rolls from scratch. Costco carries a lot of convenient ready-to heat meals for Thanksgiving/Christmas like the Reser’s Scalloped Potatoes, Kevin’s Turkey Gravy and the Vicky’s Kitchen Roast Turkey Breast.

Calories
One cabbage roll contains 140 calories, five grams of fat, 19 grams of carbohydrates, two grams of fibre, six grams of sugar, seven grams of protein and 600 milligrams of sodium. One cabbage roll isn’t very high in calories, fat or carbohydrates but these are quite high in sodium!
Ingredients
The ingredients list is short and sweet with everything you’d expect to see in a homemade cabbage roll. These don’t contain gluten, dairy or soy. I don’t love seeing sugar as an ingredient but when I did some searching online it seems that sugar is in a lot of homemade cabbage roll recipes.

I enjoyed these cabbage rolls a lot more than I thought I would! I’ve only ever had homemade ones and these store-bought pre-packaged ones don’t disappoint. They’re convenient and would work well as a Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner side.

Hi Natalie, I think it has become a new standard for prepackaged foods to list high in sodium, high in sugar labels. When I was travelling in Brazil last month and noticed many prepared foods over there listing similar labels and those food items have been a staple when I was growing up there. Back to these cabbage rolls, at first I thought they were expensive too, but checking other competitors, Costco still cheaper. The rolls were pretty good, not the best, but okay and something easy to pop when you don’t wanna cook.
Interesting that Brazil does it too! I think it’s good to have the labels, makes it easier for people who are avoiding high sodium etc to know what not to buy.
Excellent review. Cabbage rolls are now on my Costco grocery list.Thanks.
Hmmmm these do sound good but that sodium content is a big no go for me! I’ve never thought of cabbage rolls as being a side dish (maybe that’s a cultural thing?), they’re a lot of work, so for me they’re the “main event”. I’d probably inhale at least 2! Plus sour cream, right? 😋
