Dubai-style chocolate seems to be all the rage this holiday season, appearing not only in chocolates but in a variety of desserts. I previously reviewed a Dubai-style panettone, and now I’m trying the FoodToGo Dubai-style brownies from Costco. These brownies are filled with a rich pistachio cream and kunafa, read on to find out what I thought of them!

Location in Store
These are located in the seasonal/Christmas aisle at Costco. Near the Kirkland Signature Crepes and the Kirkland Signature Belgian Luxury Chocolates. The item number is 1972181.

Taste
These are tasty enough, but I’m not sure they’re worth the price—they’re very rich. The brownie portion itself is okay, not amazing. Right out of the package, the texture is moist, and the brownie is chocolaty and rich, but it becomes dry pretty quickly. It’s also quite sweet.

he pistachio cream has a lot of crunchy texture from the kunafa and definitely tastes like pistachio. It’s a bit on the sweet side, but I find that most Dubai-style products are quite sugary. The chocolate shavings on top add a bit of extra sweetness and texture.

The brownie is shaped like a ring, with the pistachio cream as the filling, so there’s a generous amount of pistachio cream and kunafa. It reminds me of a brownie version of the Chocovia Dubai Chocolate. Together, the brownie and the large amount of pistachio cream with kunafa create a very sweet, rich dessert.

Cost
These are pretty expensive! You get eight large brownies in the box for $19.79 Canadian. That seems a bit pricey, considering these aren’t the most amazing brownies I’ve tried—and they work out to over two dollars per brownie.

Convenience
Each brownie comes individually packaged, so you can easily pack one in your lunch bag or share them with others. They can be stored at room temperature, and the best-before date is about six months from the purchase date. These are good on their own, but if you want a truly decadent dessert, you could serve them with some ice cream.

Nutrition
Calories
One 85-gram brownie contains 460 calories, 27 grams of fat, 50 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of fibre, 35 grams of sugar, 8 grams of protein, and 50 milligrams of sodium. These are definitely indulgent and packed with calories, fat, and sugar.

Ingredients
The ingredients list includes pretty much all the not-so-healthy items you’d expect to find in a packaged brownie—things like palm oil, canola oil, artificial colors, sugar, and natural flavor. I do appreciate that the pistachio cream contains real pistachios and pistachio butter. The brownies contain wheat, eggs, nuts, milk, and soy, and may also contain peanuts.

Overall
Give it a try!
For a packaged brownie, these aren’t bad—they’re just quite sweet and nowhere near bakery quality. I probably wouldn’t buy them again, but I’ll definitely finish the box.
