Whenever I see a new Rana pasta kit at my local Costco, I pick one up to try. I find they can be hit or miss; some are worth buying, while others are better skipped. Since I enjoy most seafood, I had high hopes for this Shrimp Ravioli with Lobster Sauce. Read on to find out whether it lived up to my expectations!

Location in Store
I found this in the refrigerated deli section, near the other fresh pasta like the Kirkland Signature Spinach & Cheese Ravioli and the Rana Beef & Short Rib Lasagna. The item number is 1876065.
Taste
I’m not totally in love with this pasta kit, it’s just okay. I find it a bit bland. The filling is mostly ricotta, with about one or two small pieces of shrimp per ravioli. The shrimp in the filling is quite tough and chewy, but not fishy tasting. The ravioli itself is nice, I boiled it for only four minutes, and it came out perfectly cooked, not too firm and not too soft or falling apart.

The sauce is like a thick lobster bisque. There isn’t a lot of it, and it’s also quite bland. It’s not even very salty, which I found surprising. It’s a creamy sauce with a hint of lobster flavor and a few small bits of lobster, but not much at all. I like that the meal isn’t fishy-tasting or smelling. I appreciate that the flavors aren’t too pungent, but I do wish the dish were a bit more flavorful overall.

Cost
907-gram pasta kit costs $17.99 Canadian at Costco, which isn’t cheap. I think one package could easily feed two adults for dinner, but there likely wouldn’t be quite enough for a family of four. There also isn’t a substantial amount of shrimp or lobster in the ravioli and sauce to justify the cost.

Convenience
The pasta kit needs to be kept refrigerated, and the best-before date is about a month from the date of purchase. The kit includes a package of ravioli and a pouch of sauce. You heat the sauce in a pan or skillet and boil the ravioli.

I followed the cooking instructions on the package and boiled the ravioli for four minutes, which cooked it perfectly. You can serve this as a main dish or as a side with something like steak (for a surf-and-turf meal) or salmon.

Calories
A 1¼-cup (300-gram) serving contains 550 calories, 24 grams of fat, 67 grams of carbohydrates, 11 grams of fibre, 14 grams of sugar, 23 grams of protein, and 1,390 milligrams of sodium. I’m shocked by how much sodium there is, considering how bland it tastes!

Ingredients
The ingredients list is fairly long, with some items I’m not a fan of, such as sugar, natural flavor, and corn oil. That said, there are also plenty of whole, simple ingredients like butter, tomato paste, celery, carrots, onions, and lobster meat. The pasta kit contains eggs, milk, shellfish, and wheat. There are no soy products listed in the ingredients.

Overall
Give it a try!
This was just okay, considering the cost and lack of flavor, I wouldn’t purchase it again. My favorite Rana I’ve tried so far is the tagliatelle, seasoned white chicken & mushroom sauce. Other ones like the French onion style ravioli bake and the tagliolini with creamy lemon sauce are just okay like this one.
