Costco Rana French Onion Style Ravioli Bake Review

I enjoy French onion soup and have previously reviewed the Cuisine Adventures French Onion Soup from Costco. I had never seen or even heard of a French onion style ravioli bake before, so when I spotted this Rana product at Costco, I had to pick it up and give it a try. It looked like the perfect hearty, comfort meal for a winter night. Unfortunately, after trying it, I wouldn’t buy it again, find out why below!

Location in Store

This is located in the refrigerated deli section of Costco, near the Kirkland Signature Basil Pesto and the Kirkland Signature Spinach & Cheese Ravioli. The item number is 5057007.

Taste

This isn’t my favorite Rana meal, and despite liking French onion soup, I probably wouldn’t buy it again. My biggest complaint about the meal is the portion size—there’s only enough ravioli for two people, and there’s barely any beef included.

Overall, the meal is quite rich, with lots of thick, creamy, slightly sweet French onion sauce. It vaguely reminds me of a mushroom sauce, though it isn’t one. It’s more like the Cuisine Adventures French Onion Soup, but in the form of a thick sauce.

The sauce contains a few caramelized onions and some chunks of beef, but not many. The quality of the beef in the dish isn’t great. On a positive note, the ravioli itself has a very flavorful cheese filling. Each ravioli contains a good amount of filling, and what’s there is full of flavor.

Cost

The 992-gram package costs $19.99 Canadian, which, in my opinion, is quite expensive for what you get. There was very little beef, and there wasn’t enough ravioli to adequately serve a family of four.

Convenience

There are two cooking methods listed on the packaging: you can either microwave the ravioli meal or cook it in the oven. I used the oven method, which turned out fine. I don’t think microwaving the ravioli would yield significantly different results.

I served this with a Caesar salad and fresh bread, which paired well with the meal. It’s a somewhat unique pasta dish, so I’m not convinced kids would love it. The meal needs to be kept refrigerated and has a best-before date of about a month from when I purchased it. I’m sure it would freeze well, too.

Nutrition

Calories

A one-and-a-half cup serving contains 530 calories, 33 grams of fat, 35 grams of carbohydrates, two grams of fibre, eight grams of sugar, 24 grams of protein, and 1,420 milligrams of sodium. I was surprised by the amount of protein per serving, especially since there wasn’t much meat in the dish. The calories, fat, and sodium levels are all quite high.

Ingredients

The ingredients list is quite long and includes a few less-healthy ingredients, such as corn oil, sunflower oil, and sugar. “Natural flavor” is also listed multiple times. The meal contains milk, eggs, and wheat, but does not contain soy.

Overall

Walk on by!

My parents enjoyed this meal but complained about the lack of meat. In my opinion, the dish is too rich and heavy.
