Costco KFI Ready to Eat Butter Chicken Review

I’ve tried KFI’s Butter Chicken, Vindaloo, and Coconut Curry cooking sauces from Costco, but I’d never come across a ready-to-eat KFI meal until now. Since I really enjoyed the Butter Chicken cooking sauce, I decided to pick up this convenient meal, which includes pre-cooked chicken and butter chicken sauce, just add rice and naan for an easy dinner. Read on to find out whether it’s worth adding to your cart on your next Costco shopping trip!

Location in Store

This is located in the refrigerated deli section of Costco near the Rana Beef & Short Rib Lasagna and the Connie’s Kitchen Chicken Burgers. The item number is 2042116.

Taste

The first thing I noticed about the KFI Butter Chicken was the quality of the chicken. The pieces are large, tender, and free of any noticeable fat or gristle, which was a pleasant surprise. That said, there isn’t a lot of chicken in each pack, and the sauce definitely outweighs the meat.

The butter chicken has a mild to medium level of heat. It’s slightly spicy, but even if you’re sensitive to spice, it should still be approachable. The sauce has a rich, authentic butter chicken flavor with a subtle hint of sweetness that complements the spices well.

Overall, this ready-to-eat KFI Butter Chicken from Costco is a tasty and convenient meal that butter chicken fans will likely enjoy. I definitely recommend serving it with rice and naan, as there’s much more sauce than chicken, making it perfect for soaking up every last bite.

Cost

The one-kilogram box contains two 500-gram vacuum-sealed packs of butter chicken and costs $19.99 Canadian. After seeing how much chicken is actually in each 500-gram pack, I think it’s fairly expensive. Each pack is mostly sauce with only a modest amount of chicken.

Convenience

The only heating instructions provided are to boil the unopened bag of butter chicken in a pot of water. Personally, I’m not a fan of heating food in plastic, even if it’s designed for that purpose, so I was disappointed that there weren’t alternative heating instructions included.

The best-before date on the butter chicken was about two months from the date I purchased it, giving it a decent refrigerated shelf life. If you don’t plan to eat it before then, you can easily freeze it for later. I recommend serving it with rice, naan, and a side salad or steamed vegetables to round out the meal.

Nutrition

Calories

A 1/2-cup serving contains 180 calories, eight grams of fat, seven grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, four grams of sugar, 21 grams of protein, and 860 milligrams of sodium. I like that it’s relatively low in sugar and provides a generous amount of protein.

Ingredients

The ingredients list is relatively short, with chicken breast and butter chicken sauce as the two main ingredients. The sauce does contain canola oil, carrageenan, and preservatives, which I don’t love seeing. The butter chicken is gluten-free and soy-free, but it does contain milk.
