Costco Bread Garden Pineapple Cake Review

One of the worst items I’ve tried and reviewed from the bakery section at Costco!

I love anything pineapple or coconut flavored, my mom makes the best coconut cupcakes and my grandma used to make an amazing pineapple marshmallow dessert for Christmas each year. When I saw this Bread Garden Pineapple Cake with Cream Cheese & Toasted Coconut Icing in the Costco bakery I had to try it to review.

I’ve reviewed a ton of Costco cakes here on the blog! My all-time favorite cakes from the Costco bakery are the Tuxedo Cake, Strawberry Shortcake, Tiramisu Cake and the New York Style Cheesecake with Strawberry topping.

This Bread Garden Pineapple Cake can be found in the bakery section, it’s not refrigerated. The item number is 1548836.

Taste

I want to love this cake because of how much I like pineapple and coconut but I sadly don’t like this cake at all. It’s soooo very dry and crumbly! I couldn’t believe how dry it was. I gave some to my parents who are anti-food wasters and they tried to add ice cream to moisten it up but still couldn’t eat it.

The flavor of the cake is really bland, there’s pieces of dried pineapple but even those are dry and tasteless and the cake itself doesn’t have much pineapple flavor or really any flavor at all.

I was hoping that the icing would redeem the cake a little but it was my least liked part of the cake. The amount of icing is paper thin and it tasted of pure sugar with no flavor, completely missing that tangy, real cream cheese icing flavor.

Cost

I paid $8.99 Canadian for the cake and it was definitely not worth my $8.99.

Convenience

The cake has a best before date of a week from the date I purchased it on. You could easily freeze the cake if you’re not going to eat it right away.

If this tasted better it would be awesome to bring to a pot luck, barbecue or just enjoy at home for breakfast, a snack or dessert!

  1. Yup, this is AWFUL!!! It’s really dry which is surprising as I’ve had pineapple cakes before and they were moist.

  3. Wish I’d seen your review before buying it but I think the cake landed in MB before it reached you out west. Indeed this cake was probably the worst item I’ve ever purchased at Costco. It was dry and tasteless despite appearing to be the complete opposite. My only suggestion in how to use this cake (if you were unfortunate enough to buy it) is to chop it up and dump it in a trifle. As tasteless as it is, the dryness would work well with layers of pudding, cream and fruit.
