I’ve tried the Veggies Made Great Spinach Egg White Frittatas and thought they were pretty tasty, so when I spotted the Veggies Made Great Lemon Blueberry Muffins, I thought they would be a convenient breakfast or snack option for my four-year-old. I love that these muffins incorporate hidden vegetables like yellow squash and carrots, but the biggest question is: how do they actually taste? Will they be a hit with my kid or something that stays in the freezer for months? Read my Veggies Made Great Lemon Blueberry Muffins review to find out!

Location in Store
These are located in the freezer section of Costco, near the Spudlers Breakfast Hash and the Smokey River Meat Company Turkey Breakfast Sausage. The item number is 2073202.

Taste
Overall, these muffins were just average. I sampled them with my four-year-old and immediately noticed that the texture was quite spongy, with a dryness that made them less enjoyable. The lemon flavor is very pronounced, but it has an almost artificial taste to it, which surprised me since they don’t contain artificial flavors.

The blueberries are pretty sparse, too, and their flavor is barely noticeable unless you happen to bite directly into one. Without those little bursts of blueberry, the muffins mostly taste like dry, lemon-flavored sponge cake.

Cost
The box contains 20 individually wrapped frozen muffins and costs $18.99 Canadian. That’s about $0.95 per muffin. I wouldn’t call these cheap and after tasting them I wouldn’t say they’re worth the cost.

Convenience
The muffins need to be kept frozen and have a best-before date of approximately 11 months from the date of purchase. The heating instructions recommend microwaving each muffin from frozen for 35 seconds.

However, I’m not a big fan of heating food in plastic in the microwave, so I’d probably prefer to let the muffins thaw naturally or remove them from the packaging before heating, even if that means there’s a chance they could dry out a little. These muffins are a convenient option for either breakfast or a snack!

Nutrition
Calories
Each 57-gram muffin contains 120 calories, 3 grams of fat, 21 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fibre, 10 grams of sugar, 3 grams of protein, and 170 milligrams of sodium. For a muffin, I don’t think 120 calories and 3 grams of fat are too bad, although the sugar content isn’t particularly low. I also like that each muffin provides a little bit of fibre and protein. Overall, the nutritional profile seems fairly reasonable for a convenient breakfast or snack option!

Ingredients
The ingredients list has yellow squash listed as the first ingredient which I like. The only other vegetable in the muffins is carrots and then there’s lemon and blueberries. I don’t love seeing natural flavors and canola oil but that’s pretty much to be expected in a store-bought mass produced muffin. The muffins are gluten and dariy-free but contain eggs.

Overall
Give it a try!
I found these muffins a bit dry and lacking in blueberries, they’re not bad, just not great and I find they’re expensive for what you get. I probably wouldn’t purchase them again. My four year old took one bite, said they were okay and never went back for another bite and has declined my offer of them again.
Yes they are.
In New Jersey.
There are 20 individually wrapped muffins.
