The flavor of dill pickle has recently become all the rage. These days, you can find everything from dill pickle chips and nuts to dips and salads, options that didn’t even exist not too long ago! I enjoy dill pickle flavor, but I’m not a fan of the spicy version that seems to dominate the shelves. When I spotted Summer Fresh Dill Pickle Hummus at Costco and saw that it wasn’t spicy, I didn’t hesitate to toss it in my cart. Was it a smart move or a flavor fail? Keep reading to find out!
Location in Store
This is located in the refrigerated deli section at Costco, near the guacamole, salsa and the queso dip. The item number is 1729780.
Taste
This hummus is delicious. I love the flavor of dill pickle but I don’t like spicy dill pickle products. This hummus has a noticeable dill pickle flavor that’s quite strong but really tasty! It’s tangy and complements the flavor of the chickpeas nicely.
The hummus is not overly salty and it’s really flavorful. It pairs perfectly with crackers, mini naan breads, tortilla chips and raw vegetables. The texture of the hummus is thick, smooth and creamy.
Cost
The 850-gram container of dill hummus costs $8.99 Canadian which in my opinion is extremely reasonable. It’s a pretty big container of hummus and I buy small containers of hummus from my local grocery store for five or six dollars.
Convenience
The best before date on the hummus is about a month from when I purchased it but I usually only keep an open container in my fridge for one to maximum two weeks. Obviously it needs to be kept in the refrigerator, and I can’t speak to freezing it since I’ve never frozen hummus.
This would be great in a sandwich or as a dip for raw vegetables, crackers or bread. You can be creative and use hummus on pasta, chicken or even mixed in rice!
Nutrition
Calories
Two tablespoons of this dill hummus contain 100 calories, eight grams of fat, six grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, two grams of protein and 210 milligrams of sodium. The calories and fat are pretty similar to any other hummus you find at the store.
Ingredients
The ingredients list is pretty typical for a store-bought hummus. Hummus without dill pickle seasoning usually doesn’t contain sugars and I don’t love that there’s “natural flavour” in the hummus (which usually isn’t really all that natural). I do love that this is soy-free, dairy-free and gluten-free though!

After reading this I had to have some dill hummus, so I ran to the kitchen and pulled out the food processor, a can of chickpeas, my Tahini and some Heinz Dill Relish. Even without adding anything else, it actually turned out decent. Surely not as good as ‘Summer Fresh’, (but hey, when you need a ‘dill fix’!). I did try a bag of Dillies (chips) from Costco and loved them.
I buy the small containers of regular hummus at Costco and freeze them. They thaw fine in the fridge and the taste and texture is not changed by freezing.
