Costco Kirkland Signature Bacon Crumbles Review

Nothing beats freshly cooked bacon, but bacon bits are versatile and convenient. I’ve tried some bacon crumbles that taste like chemicals and some that are very fatty, but I was fairly confident that Costco’s Kirkland brand would make a good-quality version. Was I right? How good are the Kirkland Signature Bacon Crumbles from Costco?

I wanted some bacon bits to go along with the Costco Naleway Perogies I reviewed yesterday, so I bought these Costco Kirkland Signature Bacon Crumbles!

Some Costco foods that you could add these bacon crumbles include the Costco Kirkland Signature Cheese Pizza, Costco Kirkland Signature Chicken Penne Alfredo, Costco The Keg Prime Rib Beef Burgers, Costco Eat Smart Sweet Kale Salad Kit and the Costco Johnny’s Potato Cheddar Soup Mix.

You can find the bacon crumbles in the aisle with croutons, salad dressings, nuts and other condiments. The item number is 190316.

Taste

The Costco Kirkland Signature Bacon Crumbles taste like real-deal bacon and not like the fake, powdery, super crunchy bacon bits you get from some brands or restaurants. These bacon crumbles are actually made of real bacon. The crumbles found in the bag come in different shapes, sizes and textures, so you can tell they’re produced from actual bacon.

Some pieces are a little crunchier and some are a little bit more on the soft and fatty side. These bacon pieces taste fresh and aren’t as greasy as other bacon bits I’ve had. They’re a great way to add real bacon flavor to things like baked potatoes, eggs, etc.

Cost

The 567-gram bag of bacon crumbles costs $10.99 Canadian. This may not seem cheap, but it’s a huge bag of bacon crumbles that will last quite a while!

Convenience

The Costco bacon crumbles are extremely convenient! I love having a bag in my fridge. The best before date is about nine months from the date I purchased my bag, which is awesome because there’s no way I could use this big bag very quickly. I also appreciate that the bag can be re-sealed after opening!

Make sure to refrigerate the bag after opening. You can add bacon crumbles to eggs, salads, potatoes, sandwiches, pasta, pizza or even on burgers instead of bacon strips. One method to reduce the grease of the bacon crumbles and crisp them up a bit is to heat the crumbles in a small frying pan for a few minutes before using them. I use this trick quite often.

Ingredients

The ingredients list is not long and looks very typical for bacon crumbles: it’s basically just pork and preservatives. You don’t need a lot of bacon crumbles to flavor your dishes; just a tablespoon or two adds a nice bacon flavor.

  1. I just threw away well over a half of a bag of Kirkland Brand Bacon Crumbles which should be called Kirkland Brand Globs of Bacon Fat. After picking out the globs of fat to save the bacon which should have some fat I quite once the bowl of fat globs started to get full and I through it all away.
    What a waist of money and a blow to my respect to Costco’s quality control.

  2. Good product I use them a lot but I wish they would Trim and take the pork skins out, when you get a piece of pork skin it taste like a piece of rubber band. Other than the chunk of rubber(pork skin) every once in a while, they’re good

    • I agree! I’ve been using these for approx. two years and was wondering if others had noticed the change or if it was just an anomaly. These bacon crumbles were the best!
      Unfortunately, I just opened a 3rd bag that is majority bacon fat. The change appears to have taken place within the past 3-6 months. It’s very disappointing.

  3. I bought a bag of these down here in the USA not too long ago. Delicious BUT
    for some reason the bag didn’t say anything about refrigerating it after opening so we didn’t. Threw them out when they started looking a bit odd. Silly us I guess.

  4. Hello, once the bag is opened and refrigerated, do you still go by the best before date or, once opened, you have a time limit to consume it? For example within a week of opening as most websites say?
    How do these bacon bits stay good for a long time!?

      • Same. I’ve had them last a VERY long time in the fridge after opening, up until their best by date which is quite a while. Just keep them sealed, don’t contaminate the bag with dirty hands, etc. and they last for ages.

  5. I have a method for making a breakfast sandwich using egg cooked in the microwave. I’ve added the bacon bits on top of the egg before microwaving…or sprinkled them on the egg as I assemble my sandwich. Easy and delicious!
    Also great for making BLTs!

    • I can’t say they’re fine because I’d hate for you to get sick but usually what I do is smell them and look at them, if they look and smell okay I taste them.

  8. I am not a huge fan of bacon generally but this is a good option to have in the house and use as needed for a ‘bit’ of bacon flavour. However, I find it isn’t cooked enough for me so I dump the entire package in a large fry pan and render it down a bit more. After cooking for about 10 min, I put it on a large paper-towel lined cookie sheet to get rid of more grease and to cool. I then put the (further) cooked product back in the original bag and freeze it and it’s perfect. I take out what I need.

    My husband uses them in his steel cut oats for breakfast!

  10. I wonder how much they cost now. I saw these in my last online shopping trip but for $20 a bag (U.S.) they don’t seem worth it when I can bake a pound of bacon on a cooling rack in the oven @ 400 for 20-30 minutes and get to keep the fat to use later. I do understand the convenience appeal, but I’m more likely to just order delivery in that instance.

  11. These taste a lot better when you put them in the mic for a bit… they crisp up. Personally I don’t like them straight out of the package, they are too soft and greasy but crisping them up in the mic makes all the difference in the world. They are a huge package and a great price and I add them to salads, frittatas, pasta.. quick and easy.

  12. Yup, we get these in the states, even same packaging (with a little less french on them 😉 Super useful for various recipes. Nice that they are shelf stable at room temp until opened, then I stash them in the fridge, but even for us in a 2-person household we haven’t had a problem going through a bag before expiration.
