Costco Kirkland Signature Meat Lasagna Review

The Kirkland Signature Meat Lasagna has been a staple at Costcos in my city for as long as I can remember. Costco seems to have rolled out a lot of new pre-made meals in the past couple of years and also started rotating them in and out of stock more, but the Meat Lasagna is there every time I go. That must mean I’m not the only person who likes it! One interesting fact that I realized in updating this old post is how much the price of the lasagna has gone up over the past few years. Keep reading to find out how much inflation has impacted the cost of this Costco staple.

Other pre-made meals from Costco are the Kirkland Signature Mac and Cheese, Kirkland Signature Enchilada Bake, Kirkland Signature Four Cheese and Spinach Manicotti, Kirkland Signature Chicken Penne Alfredo, Kirkland Signature Chicken Burger Meal Kit, Kirkland Signature Shepherd’s Pie, Kirkland Signature Chicken Tacos and the Kirkland Signature Chicken Pot Pie.

Location in Store

This is located in the pre-made meal section at Costco. The item number is 13175.

The top of the lasagna has the most cheese.

Taste

This lasagna is good, not amazing but I like it. It’s quite saucy if you like lots of sauce. I noticed the tomato sauce in the lasagna has a hint of spiciness to it. There are also a few chunks of tomatoes in the sauce that I like. The noodles are the perfect tenderness, not mushy and not too firm after baking the lasagna for 55 minutes.

Very hearty!

One complaint I have is that the meat is a bit dry, chewy and tough. The meat in the lasagna is a combination of pork and beef. I also wish there was more cheese because I love the taste of the romano, mozzarella and cottage cheese that are used in this lasagna. All of the cheeses blend perfectly together.

Looks so good!

I really like the flavor of basil but if you’re not a fan of basil you may want to steer clear of this because it has a pronounced basil flavor. I find the lasagna to be such a comfort food and this Costco one is really filling!

I’d love a bit more cheese in the lasagna, the top has a lot but not the rest.

Cost

The price of the lasagna has gone up significantly! In the fall of 2018, it cost $7.69 Canadian per kilogram. Five years later, it’s now up to $10.49 Canadian per kilogram! That’s a 36% increase! I double-checked and the ingredients are the same. I guess even Costco can’t keep prices down with the inflation we’ve had the past few years.

Convenience

To cook the lasagna, remove the plastic lid, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and cook directly in the container for 45-55 minutes. I heated it in the oven on a baking tray but the directions do not state that it’s necessary to bake it on a baking sheet.

The lasagna has a best-before date of five days from when it was packaged and it needs to be kept refrigerated. I’m quite certain that Costco puts these out frozen and they thaw in the store. My parents buy them and freeze them for later use and have never had an issue.

The lasagna is the perfect convenient, hearty meal for days when you don’t feel like cooking. I like to serve it with a side salad and garlic toast.

I love to get it nice and golden brown in some spots.

Nutrition

Calories

1/12 of the tray contains 200 calories, nine grams of fat, 510 mg of sodium, 14 grams of protein, three grams of sugar, two grams of fibre and 18 grams of carbohydrates.

I think a lot of people, including myself will eat much more than a twelfth of the tray. I probably eat more like 1/6th of the tray for dinner, so double the calories, fat and sodium.

Ingredients

The benefit of making lasagna from scratch at home is that you can use simple ingredients and avoid any fillers, preservatives of chemicals. The Costco lasagna ingredients list isn’t actually too bad and has mostly the same ingredients you’d use at home.

Ingredients I don’t love seeing are concentrated soy protein (just why) and sugar. The lasagna contains wheat, egg, soy and milk and may contain fish, shellfish, crustaceans, tree nuts, peanuts, sesame and mustard. I think this is due to being packaged in a facility that packages products containing these allergens.

Overall

Give it a try!

Both Sean and I like this lasagna. We don’t eat it often, but when we do it’s usually on a night when we’re rushing off to do something and want an easy yet tasty dinner.

  1. I bought their lasagna only once to give it a try and really liked it. It was like they took ravioli and stacked them rather than using lasagna pasta so the pasta was thicker than normal lasagna would have. But unexpectedly our son and granddaughter stopped over and at the last minute the four of us shared a good meal. It was better than buying a frozen lasagna and very convenient in a pinch. We will definitely buy one again for the convenience of having a good tasting meal that I can just heat in the oven.

  2. Can you tell me if the lasagna comes into the store already frozen and is defrosted. Because on many occasions when you purchase it or the shepherds pie they seem still frozen on the bottom, so makes this unrefreezeable and it is not noted on the container previously frozen. tks

  3. It is an easy prep however the true flavor gets overlooked due to the excess use of spices. Lasagna is not meant to overly spicy and this definitely is. We’ve tried it a couple of times, never again.

  4. It’s not as.good as it used to be. The “ meat” now has a “concentrated soy protein.” See ingredients above. The texture and taste of a ground beef and pork just aren’t there any more. For the first time I tossed the leftovers.

  5. This is one of my favorites. All you have to do is put it in the oven for an hour and all you have to do is enjoy when it comes out of the oven. Certainly there are better lasagna recipes but none with this blend of convenience, tastiness, and quality. I’m waiting for summer to end to get my next batch.

    • Obviously, you have an overly inflated sense of self importance, Connor! Why would anyone mention that they’re living across the street from Oprah and Ellen if they weren’t trying to rub it in people’s faces! Obviously, you’re extremely arrogant, and think yourself to be better than everyone else just by what you’ve written here! In reality, I highly doubt anyone here believes you at all, when you say that that is where you live! Also, telling someone you need to give them a lesson on how to cook real lasagna is extremely self-aggrandizing as well! Next time you post anywhere on this or any other website, keep your BS personal life to yourself, no one cares! Is this what you do to get yourself attention, because your life is so pathetic and you really live in a one bedroom apartment somewhere by yourself in some diving neighbourhood so you gotta make stuff like this up! Seriously, do you really think anyone believes you have a nice day! No doubt, Connor, that you believe yourself to be better than everyone else on the planet, by the sounds of your writing! Guess what, you’re not! What you’ve written here, and how you’ve written it, shows me that you’re probably less than everybody else! And please, get a real life!
